Information about Mexicali, Mexico

Mexicali is the state capital of Baja California. Known as "The city that captures the sun" it has long, hot summers and short, cold winters. Mexicali is located on the border of Mexico and California and got its name from combining the two words: MEXI-co and CALI-fornia. Mexicali offers a wide variety of activities. Tourists, who like bullfights, must visit the Plaza de Calafia Bullring. The city also offers a treat to those folks who love wrestling and boxing. Mexicali as well offers a professional golf course with 18 holes.

Mexicali also offers excellent Chinese cuisine, a State theater, and an art gallery called The City Gallery that presents. Tourists and locals alike can enjoy a thrilling venture into the region's past by visiting the exhibitions of the University Museum and its historical hall, as well as the Cucapah Community Museum, whose mission is to preserve and spread the customs and traditions of the Cucapah, an indigenous tribe in the region. Of course, one can also explore the Chinese Pagoda in Plaza de la Amistad, along the Garita border crossing, as well as the modern Civic Center, which is the administrative heart of the municipality. Organized by international associations like SCORE and CODE, the famous Score San Felipe 250 takes place in March. The Sand Drags amount to pure adrenaline in fast machines, and its best moments can be experienced in January, March, May, June and September.

Golf in Mexicali
Anyone who enjoys golfing will find that it is a well-established sport in Mexicali. The Club de Golf Campestre has an 18-hole course that features huge fairways, adorned by water hazards and sand traps that lead to excellent, quick greens which are often times surrounded by more water and sand traps.

Guadalupe canyon
Located on the East side of Sierra de Juarez, surrounded by granite walls the canyon is adjacent to the desert of "Laguna Salada". Located at just 5 meters above the sea level Guadalupe Canyon shows to its visitants its various natural attractions, like mineralized hot springs and cold spring water formed with the flow of the river. For those who have the spirit of explorers we recommend going thru the canyon and search for its cold spring water holes and cascades, cave paintings, and its dense palm and impressive desert flora that offers a natural refuge for vast variety of fauna.

Hunting in Mexicali
An extensive variety of birds and mammals like White Winged Dove, Huilota Dove, Cerceta, Black Branta, Goose, Pheasant, Duck, Quail, Black Tail Hare, Rabbit, Coyote, Wild Cat and Puma will put the skill of any hunter to the test. In the Valle de Mexicali, the season begins at the end of August and ends in February

Fishing in Mexicali
Mexicali offers exciting places for freshwater fishing adventures. In addition to 1550 miles of canals, there are prime spots like Laguna Bogard, Rio Hardy, El Caimán, la Ciénega de Santa Clara, and el Bosque de la Ciudad, where you can participate in important tournaments all year long. A few of the species you will find while fishing are: Lobina, Bagre, Carpa, and Tilapia. For the ones that loves the adventure of the ocean, the coastline of San Felipe and spots like Roca Consag, Barco Hundido, Los Carros, Punta Estrella and Percebú, are well known fishing areas in addition to fishing out on the open sea. Catch-and-release tournaments allow fishing for shallow-water species as well as trophy-fish like Pez Vela, Marlin Dorado, and Jurel, among others.

Mountain biking in Mexicali
For the adventure-lover and those that enjoy the sensation of an adrenaline rush, mountain biking holds limitless thrills. Mountain biking trails are available less than 30 minutes to the west of the city.

Yet another event of international acclaim is the Annual Binational Dance Festival.

Great cuisine of Mexicali
Mexicali offers a great variety of flavors and international cuisine. Chinese food holds a prominent place in the community due to the large numbers of these restaurants. The traditional carne asada (roast beef or barb Q) and the refreshing beers are distinctive to the area.

Professional baseball in Mexicali.
If you are a baseball fan, then you will certainly want to catch hold of the spirit during the Mexican Pacific League’s baseball season. Every year from October to January, you can enjoy the Mexicali Eagles’ exciting games, which are held in the city’s stadium, “The Eagle’s Nest.” The team boasts players that are recognized both in the United States and all over Latin America.

Calafia bullring
For those who love the spectacle of bullfighting, the Plaza de Toros Calafia hosts the best regulated bullfights throughout the year and is also a magnificent venue for other events, such as large concerts starring national artists and local festivals.
